Inside the Lines Newsletter – September

Charlie’s Tennis Tips of the month:
1. Touch and placement are far more important in doubles than killing the ball – especially with volleys and overheads.
2. Returning the Serve – stay focused with a return that best fits your ability. Overstressing your return will force you not to be accurate and consistent.
3. Take advantage of a second serve – chip and charge to the net. This is a must have shot in doubles because it allows you to have time to charge the net before your opponent makes contact with the ball. This shot, as we know, is the “slice”.
4. Test your net opponent early in the match from either the deuce or ad court. Take advantage of
a second serve and attack your opponent who is at the net. This can and will serve as two basic things: First, you can keep them honest by showing them you are not afraid of hitting at
your opponent on the second serve, and secondly, test their volleying skills. You will soon learn if they use the correct grip to volley and how quick their hands are.
5. Engage in the point – don’t wait to be engaged. Don’t be afraid of getting passed at the net. While at the net, always try to engage in the point. This will help you keep your feet moving so you don’t become a perfect target for your opponents.
6. Take advantage of a short ball to hit down the alley. Let them know you are not afraid to challenge their volleys. If they hit the ball back, hit right back to them and shorten their reaction time.
7. The serve – As we all know we must hit the ball in if we want to put pressure on our opponents. Improving consistency will give you CONFIDENCE and only at this time can you start moving the ball in the service box. Your percentages will increase, giving you the opportunity to do more at the net.
